Credit cards are known to have some of the highest rates of any consumer credit vehicle. It is absolutely essential that, as a consumer, you should get a firm handle on your credit cards.

Financial institutions really love to keep you making payments. They keep generating revenue from your interest payments, and the higher the interest that you pay, the more profits they generate.

In getting a handle your debts, you should first identify those with the highest rates of interest. The idea, now, is to make minimum payments on all other debts, so that you can put the maximum possible on the higher interest credit cards.

At this point you can consider a credit card transfer from a card with high interest to one of a lower interest rate. There may be some stipulations as to minimum amount that can be transferred.

You may be tempted to transfer as much as you possibly could, but proceed with caution. The low interest rate may only be for a limited time, and may revert to one that is higher than the original rate from which you made the transfer.

Credit card transfers should be used with caution. The higher your score, the more likely you are to receive offers, but you still need to do some elementary math to find the best one. There may be some associated fees that can increase the debt you transfer, by as much as 5 percent.

Ideally, the reduction on the interest rate must be big enough and last as long as possible to be meaningful.

You need to read the fine print and understand all the details before doing anything.

Once your high credit card debt is eliminated , you can continue making the same payments to your next highest debt. You may again repeat the credit card transfer process. If possible, you can try to pay the maximum possible at the low introductory rate before the period ends and the higher rate is introduced.

Your first target should be maxed-out cards. If your card is at, or close to its limit, consider paying it first, even though the interest is favorable. Maxing out your credit cards, can have a negative effect on your credit rating, and trigger higher rates on any new balances. It’s best to keep your balance at least below 75% of your credit limit.

There is a persistent and unfounded myth that paying off debt may actually hurt your credit scores. Paying down debt typically would help your credit scores, because it widens the gap between the balances you owe, and your credit limits, or the amounts that you originally borrowed.

Using credit card balance transfer can be good strategy, because you will usually see the most dramatic improvement in your scores when you pay down credit card debt, since the scoring formula is particularly sensitive to revolving credit.

The disadvantage of paying off debt, is that once the account is closed, it may disappear from your reports, and with no reports there is nothing to help your scores.

Do you have a balance on your credit card? Perhaps you have created a budget and know in 12 months you could have that balance paid off if you didn’t have to pay interest? If you are in a situation like this there are credit cards that can help called 0 APR balance transfer cards. Let’s take a look at how these cards work and how they can be advantageous to you.

A 0 APR balance transfer card is exactly how it sounds. You have no interest to pay on the balance transfer. The catch is that the no interest ends after a specific period of time. This period may be 3 months to 24 months, but on average you have 6 to 15 months from most credit card companies. You will need to compare the different introductory deals on the market to determine which credit card offers the longest term of 0 APR on balance transfers and whether you can obtain that credit card or not. After the 0 APR deal ends you have two choices: you can pay the balance in full or transfer it to another card with a 0 APR deal. You can also leave it on the card and pay interest on the balance till you pay the card off, but this is not the best method and therefore we didn’t count it as a “real” choice. There are some situations where you might want to leave the money on the same card even if you pay interest. For example, if you have 500 pounds left on the card and you know you can pay it off in two months even with the little bit of finance charges it will be better to leave it on the same card.

There is usually a balance transfer fee. This fee can be 0 to 5 per cent of the transferred amount. For instance, if you transfer 500 pounds you would pay 15 pounds as a transfer fee at 3 per cent for the fee. It is probably about the same amount as the finance charges you would pay in those two months. It is not really cost effective to transfer such a low amount, especially when you consider you would have to open a new credit card to do so. Having too many credit cards open can count against you on credit scores. Closing an older account when you open a new account can also count against you lowering your scores.

This is why you should ideally choose a 0 APR balance transfer cards with a long term introductory deal where you can pay the card off in full before the specified period ends. In this way you pay a fee once and then you pay the card off before the interest is charged. It only works if you do not make purchases with the same card too, since you can always make purchases on a credit card, but you would have to pay interest on that amount.

PruProtect, the joint venture between Prudential and South African company Discovery, has launched a permanent health insurance product with its own occupation definition of disability for all occupations.

The plan has two types of cover, reports review site Permanent Health Cover. Primary cover is the lower cost option so benefits are more limited than the comprehensive cover.

The maximum cover under the primary option is 50 per cent of earnings up to a £90,000 maximum, while for comprehensive cover it is 60 per cent of earnings for the first £30,000 a year, then 50 per cent of earnings up to a maximum of £150,000.

Both options include recovery benefit, which provides specialist support and treatment from selected providers. The maximum for this is £1,000 for primary cover and £2,000 for comprehensive cover.

To encourage people to get back to work, both options also provide a back-to-work benefit. For primary cover, this is 25 per cent of monthly benefit in the first month and 10 per cent in the second. This rises to 50 per cent of monthly benefit in the first month and 25 per cent in the second with the comprehensive cover.

This plan appears to offer advisers what they want for their income protection clients, with innovative features such as the recovery back-to-work benefits. However, primary cover inevitably has some limitations compared with comprehensive cover. There is no waiver of premium and guaranteed insurability is limited to a change in salary following promotion or changes to a mortgage.

The Shocking Truth Credit Card Companies Are Afraid To Tell You.

Credit cards are an easy way to immediate gratification to spend and buy with money you dont have and it often forces many to run into debt and even bankruptcy. It is therefore crucial to weigh the pros and cons before filling out any old application for a credit card which I receive almost daily in my mail LOL (:–).

There are several factors which should be considered before applying Ive tried to outline them below but please keep in mind this is a short list to serve as a guideline only:

1. Every time when you apply for credit of any kind or a credit card, a mark is made against your credit rating. The available credit on the card you have is applied to your overall debt ratio even if you dont have a single dollar balance on it !! Can you believe that !

2. Some credit cards give points when you purchase nearly anything. These points can be used for further shopping and other great bonuses, Air Miles for example. Hence, if youre a frequent flyer you should look for credit cards that offer rewards that will be a benefit to you. The points earned by you come in handy for future hotels and flights.

3. Look for credit cards, which offer standard APR and low introductory rates for balance transfers.

4. Some credit cards award you cash back for purchasing at certain stores. Therefore, apply for a card which awards cash back at stores where you actually shop or it wont be worth it.

5. Accountability: In my own situation Ive made myself accountable to my wife for large purchases so as to not let my emotions get the best of me. There will always be another super sale!

6. Checks and Balances: Come up with your own plan for dealing with debt before you apply. This will be something you can look back on if you run up a debt on the card. Tie this in with #5 above so that if you do begin to run a debt balance youll be able to pay it off soon. The majority of credit card holders run a large balance and for many this would be dealt with if they had an accountability partner to work through the debt with.

7. One benefit of credit cards is that if you continually make your payments it looks really good to on your credit statement and may actually help your overall score.

If youre still set on getting a card here are some guidelines to help you choose a reliable company.

1. Interest rates: Your most important factor to consider while managing credit card debt. Choose a low interest rate credit card and only after reading all terms and conditions.

Of course youll be way happier to just pay it off each month but like most you might run a balance here or there and high rate cards can bite you if you do.

2. Annual fees: Most credit cards now do not require any annual fee, this being driven by competition. Try for a credit card company which does not charge any annual fees. Although Ive found in personal experience that if youre wanting the bonuses and points plans there will be a fee in many cases.

3. Withdrawals or Cash advances: Though handy in certain situations this can sometimes be way too tempting and ring up your debt faster than youd like.

4. Loyalty Schemes or Reward points: Cash back rewards and Air miles are used to attract you the customers. Many people chose a specific credit card for these kinds of benefits. Be cautious while buying credit card with these benefits.

5. Insurance: Choose a credit card with insurance, which will cover you from any theft or burglary. If you are a frequent traveler then choose a card which provides you free travel insurance.

6. Gold and Platinum cards: These might look great in your purse or wallet but often they are not the most competitive cards in the market. Annual charges are also applied to these types of cards. So dont decide on designs and colors of cards. Just see their benefits and compare from there.

7. Conduct an online comparison: There are many types of online surveys and comparison reports that have been conducted. Try doing a google.com search on the term credit card reviews.

Of course the above is not an exhaustive list but should put you in the right direction if this is your first time applying for a credit card.

Credit cards get a bad reputation. They are blamed for the consumer’s abuse and used as a crutch for overspending. But, credit cards aren’t all bad. They can provide insurance, purchase protections and extended warranties that debit cards or cash don’t offer. If used properly, bringing the plastic into play is your best choice for payment. Here are some of the benefits that credit cards offer over debit cards.

1. Renting a Car
Most credit cards will cover some damages that may occur when renting a car. That means you might not have to ante up for the extra insurance that rental companies push. A couple of conditions may apply, such as the driver must be the primary renter, you must decline the collision damage waiver and rental loss or damage insurance may not be available in every country. Exclusions may also apply so check the coverage terms in your policy.

2. Price Match
Credit cards help consumers with price protection. Should you find a lower price on the same item within 60 days, credit issuers will refund the price difference. There may be a refund limit, and there are exceptions. Make sure you save the printed advertisement and your receipt of purchase to complete claim forms for reimbursement. Some retailers will offer a price match policy, regardless of purchase method. But paying by credit card will guarantee the refund.

3. Purchase Guarantee
Many credit cards will offer protection on eligible purchases against theft or damage. Purchase protection can replace or reimburse the card holder, but may be limited to a certain amount per occurrence. Also, if a retailer refuses to accept a return within a reasonable amount of time (usually 90 days), some cards will reimburse you for the item. Debit cards don’t usually offer this.

4. Warranty Benefits
An extended warranty protection extends the length of the existing manufacturer’s warranty up to one year. In order to qualify, make sure you register the original warranty as required by the manufacturer. You will have to submit the store/credit card receipt and a copy of the manufacturer’s warranty. Debit cards won’t help you with the warranty.

5. Cash Safeguard
Many retailers, such as gas stations, car rental companies and hotels will “block” or pre-authorize a debit card purchase until the purchase amount clears in the checking account. Blocking can take up to two business days and create a hardship for you if you need funds for another purchase. Further, if there is a mistake in any purchase price, debit cards will deduct money from your account immediately. It may take some time to clear up, causing you more problems. Most credit cards will remove the charge while the error is investigated.

There is a world of opportunity for sure when it comes to credit cards and the payment solutions. There are a number of global credit cards on the market but many fail to combine the worldwide features that are available on other competing cards. Global usage is extremely important to many consumers in a more connected world. The Qantas American Express Ultimate credit card is one such credit card that works to combine worldwide usage with consumer based activities.

In a day and age where travel is glorified there are only a few cards that can match the travel benefits that the Qantas Ultimate card offers. The Qantas American Express gives 1.5% returns on money spent; which means for every dollar you spend you will get 1 back in travel rewards. These 1 points can be used in conjuncture with frequent flier miles, can be used to travel domestically or even used for other travel luxuries. The Qantas American Express Ultimate credit card also offers an additional point per dollar spent on a multitude of services in Australia. Check with customer service to see a full listing of Qantas service partners. You can also earn yet another point if you use your Qantas card to purchase something from one of the American or Qantas Express Bonus Partners.

Why are travel rewards so important to Australian consumers? Australian consumers, just like the normal people in most other countries love to travel. Travel brings freedom and luxury and a credit card that makes this cheaper is an important choice.

The Qantas American Express gives card holders the chance to maximize their point values at a cost that is minimal to them. While most cards stop at 1 or 1.5 points per dollar, the Qantas credit card will offer up to 3.5 points per dollar spent. Another bonus is that points never expire and there is no limit to how many you can earn. Instead of being cut off at 300 points or 5000 points you can earn and earn until you just cant earn any more.

What else will a reward based credit card like the Qantas American Express Ultimate offer a card holder? Here are a few of the bonus features that you should expect: Online banking, at least 30 days of no interest on purchases, additional cards at no cost, and a bonus domestic flight with certain purchases.

The Qantas American Express credit card is one of the marketed Australian financial options which work well in terms of rewards, travel and benefits.

Everyone needs to know exactly what is on his or her credit report. Even if you have never been late with a payment in your life you need to know what your credit report reflects that reality. Mistakes happen every day, and mistakes on your credit report can dramatically affect your life.

The good news is that it is easy for anyone to correct errors on their credit report and avoid the headaches that these errors can cause.

It is a fact of life. Most adults in North America suffer from a blemish or two on their credit report. These few items could be all that prevents you from getting a better job, buying your dream home, or obtaining new credit when you need it the most.

According to an article in the Toronto Sun, business editor, Linda Leatherdale states that Canadian consumers owe an amazing $900 billion or 107% of their disposable income. U.S. consumers owe a staggering $8.4 trillion or 112% of their disposable income.

Bad credit is embarrassing, humiliating, and depressing because many people believe that a bad credit report is indicative of a person’s worth and value as a human being. But even if the problems being reported are true there are still some legitimate ways you can improve your credit report.

People with bad credit are not “deadbeats.” Everyone wants to be able to pay their bills. People typically maintain a good credit rating until some unforeseen circumstance like a layoff, medical problem, or divorce prevents them from making a few payments in a timely manner.

Everyone struggles long and hard to pay the bills on time, but sometimes the money coming in does not quite keep up with what needs to get paid. When you’re in this situation you have to carefully choose your priorities. If things get really bad, sadly enough, bankruptcy might become an attractive alternative.

If it comes down to a decision between putting food on the table and paying the credit card bill, the clear choice for most people is to look after their family first. You can bet that even those hard-nosed, self-righteous collection agents who call and hound you to pay their bill would do the same. All their talk about how they pay their bills and expect everyone else to do the same, is just a psychological ploy intended to intimidate you. The reality is that most people are only a few pay cheques away from financial catastrophe and these telephone collectors are no different from anyone else.

By knowing, and exercising your rights, you will be well on your way to rebuilding or maintaining your credit. You will have the confidence and ability to regain your financial strength and freedom. Rebuilding a good credit record requires honesty, integrity, persistence, and vigilance from this point forward. Don’t worry about the past. You cannot change it. Focus on changing your future. Improving and maintaining a good credit record will reward you and your family with a real sense of empowerment and financial freedom.

The Idiots Guide to Selecting a Credit Card Part II

There are literally hundreds – possibly thousands – of credit card offers available to consumers these days. And these days there are more things to compare than just interest rates and fees. Now, credit card holders can be rewarded for their using credit cards. Or, if youre a business owner, you might find extra features and perks with a business credit card. In this article well go over the basics of some of these above-and-beyond features of credit cards. Whenever youre thinking of applying for a credit card, its always best to compare all of their features so you get the best credit card that matches your financial lifestyle.

Rewards Programs

Probably one of the most attractive features of credit cards these days is the rewards programs that they sometimes offer. Credit card companies will often reward their cardholders for making purchases with the cards. Rewards can range from airline tickets to cash back to hotel discounts, depending on which credit card you apply for. The rewards are usually based on a point system with each dollar you spend using your credit card, you are rewarded a certain number of points that are collected in your account. When you have a certain number of points, you are able to redeem them for the reward that your credit card offers.

How can you use these types of cards to your best advantage? Think about what you do the most do you travel? Do you drive a lot and use a lot of gasoline? Do you shop at a particular store a lot? Consumers usually choose rewards credit cards that match their spending habits the best. If you travel a lot, it would be best to get a credit card that offers airline rewards. If youre on the road a lot, try finding an offer that gives you a discount on gasoline, or cash back for gasoline purchases. One thing to remember when selecting a rewards program make sure that once you choose it, it fits your needs exactly. For instance, if you fly frequently but usually fly on Midwest Express, make sure your credit card offers rewards for Midwest Express and not American Airlines. If youre a big driver, make sure youre getting rewarded for using the gasoline thats most available to you BP, Amoco, etc. There are some rewards cards that allow you a choice, but its always important to make sure youre going to get what you expect!

Business Features

If you are a business owner, using a business credit card can help you with things like payroll, managing expenses, and managing employee spending. Business credit cards now offer features like:

Detailed expense reporting allowing you to see very clearly where your hard earned business dollars are being spent.
Online account management allowing you to view and manage your credit accounts via the internet for added convenience
Customized cards and employee cards allowing you as the business owner to receive cards for your employees
Increased credit limits- allowing you to make the business purchases you need to keep your business running.
Rewards either travel, cash back, or other discounts, rewards allow you to enjoy a little bit of what youre spending

Make sure when youre applying for a business credit card that you compare these types of features and make sure your business card will meet the needs of you, your business, and your employees.

Online Access

Its not news anymore online access to bank accounts and credit accounts is just about standard these days. If youre a high powered geek, though, you might want to check out the interface and features of the online access that your credit card allows you. Online access offers you 24×7 access to your statements, transactions, customer support and billing making it much easier for you to monitor your credit expenses and pay your bills.

Security & Protection

Another feature of credit cards that is just about standard these days is the protection that credit card issuers offer you for things like identity theft and fraudulent use of your credit card. Unfortunately, there are still people out there who can acquire your credit card numbers usually by finding a receipt with your credit card number on it, getting the number through hacking online, etc.
Consumers should always keep credit card receipts in a safe place, shred them, or at the very least make sure that the credit card number and expiration date is not shown on the receipt before you throw it out. The good news is that if you notice a fraudulent charge on your credit card, its usually as easy as calling up your credit card company and reporting it. 9 times out of 10, its easy enough to prove that you didnt make the charge, and your credit card company will remove that charge from your account. With some of the higher end cards platinum cards, etc. the credit card companies actively monitor your account and will personally call you if they notice unusual activity on your credit card. In some cases, they do not authorize payments until they get approval from the card holder. These types of features add safety and security for consumers.

It has never been easier for people to live well beyond their means than it is today. Credit is easy to obtain, and in a society obsessed with material gain, credit is sought and used on a basis that is so regular even financial watchdogs are beginning to sound warning bells. The average savings for the United States and Canada over the next few years are actually expected to go into the negative figures, as more people purchase what they cannot afford.

One of the main contributors to this phenomenon is the credit card. Credit cards are very easy to obtain, and most people get them thinking they will be handy in an emergency. This is the case, but what the credit card companies know is that it will not be long before you use that piece of plastic to make a purchase that is certainly not in an emergency situation.

One way that credit cards have succeeded in getting a flood of people to spend beyond their means is to make credit cards available everywhere. The rise of the Internet has fueled a massive increase in the use of credit cards, as it is often the sole means people have to make an online purchase. Anytime you make a credit card purchase, however, there is the chance that you will forget about it. Statements that come out once a month are a great way for credit card companies to make sure their customers rack up the bills to the point where they will not be able to pay them all off in one shot, and thus gain the hefty interest.

Credit card companies also use promotional gimmicks to entice customers to charge all of their purchases on their cards. Most credit card companies have teamed up with auto dealers or some other company in order to give customers points towards future purchases. Visa has the well-advertised Win What You Buy campaign. People can be so tempted by this that they place all their purchases in the Visa in the hopes of getting it all for free. The prize, however, is rarer than winning the lottery.

Staying out of credit card debt requires using that piece of plastic frugally. If you dont have the money in the bank to make the purchase, do not do so with your credit card – it will only cost you more money in the end. If you do encounter an emergency and have to make a payment on your card, pay it off as soon as possible. If you cant do this, look into getting a line of credit from the bank. This may seem like stealing from Peter to pay Paul, but banks often offer a lower interest rate than a credit card, and the advantage of a line of credit is that banks automatically deduct an amount every month out of your other accounts toward your debt. Credit card companies are just as happy to have that debt grow and grow.
