The Shocking Truth Credit Card Companies Are Afraid To Tell

The Shocking Truth Credit Card Companies Are Afraid To Tell You.

Credit cards are an easy way to immediate gratification to spend and buy with money you dont have and it often forces many to run into debt and even bankruptcy. It is therefore crucial to weigh the pros and cons before filling out any old application for a credit card which I receive almost daily in my mail LOL (:–).

There are several factors which should be considered before applying Ive tried to outline them below but please keep in mind this is a short list to serve as a guideline only:

1. Every time when you apply for credit of any kind or a credit card, a mark is made against your credit rating. The available credit on the card you have is applied to your overall debt ratio even if you dont have a single dollar balance on it !! Can you believe that !

2. Some credit cards give points when you purchase nearly anything. These points can be used for further shopping and other great bonuses, Air Miles for example. Hence, if youre a frequent flyer you should look for credit cards that offer rewards that will be a benefit to you. The points earned by you come in handy for future hotels and flights.

3. Look for credit cards, which offer standard APR and low introductory rates for balance transfers.

4. Some credit cards award you cash back for purchasing at certain stores. Therefore, apply for a card which awards cash back at stores where you actually shop or it wont be worth it.

5. Accountability: In my own situation Ive made myself accountable to my wife for large purchases so as to not let my emotions get the best of me. There will always be another super sale!

6. Checks and Balances: Come up with your own plan for dealing with debt before you apply. This will be something you can look back on if you run up a debt on the card. Tie this in with #5 above so that if you do begin to run a debt balance youll be able to pay it off soon. The majority of credit card holders run a large balance and for many this would be dealt with if they had an accountability partner to work through the debt with.

7. One benefit of credit cards is that if you continually make your payments it looks really good to on your credit statement and may actually help your overall score.

If youre still set on getting a card here are some guidelines to help you choose a reliable company.

1. Interest rates: Your most important factor to consider while managing credit card debt. Choose a low interest rate credit card and only after reading all terms and conditions.

Of course youll be way happier to just pay it off each month but like most you might run a balance here or there and high rate cards can bite you if you do.

2. Annual fees: Most credit cards now do not require any annual fee, this being driven by competition. Try for a credit card company which does not charge any annual fees. Although Ive found in personal experience that if youre wanting the bonuses and points plans there will be a fee in many cases.

3. Withdrawals or Cash advances: Though handy in certain situations this can sometimes be way too tempting and ring up your debt faster than youd like.

4. Loyalty Schemes or Reward points: Cash back rewards and Air miles are used to attract you the customers. Many people chose a specific credit card for these kinds of benefits. Be cautious while buying credit card with these benefits.

5. Insurance: Choose a credit card with insurance, which will cover you from any theft or burglary. If you are a frequent traveler then choose a card which provides you free travel insurance.

6. Gold and Platinum cards: These might look great in your purse or wallet but often they are not the most competitive cards in the market. Annual charges are also applied to these types of cards. So dont decide on designs and colors of cards. Just see their benefits and compare from there.

7. Conduct an online comparison: There are many types of online surveys and comparison reports that have been conducted. Try doing a google.com search on the term credit card reviews.

Of course the above is not an exhaustive list but should put you in the right direction if this is your first time applying for a credit card.

The need to look at your credit report

Everyone needs to know exactly what is on his or her credit report. Even if you have never been late with a payment in your life you need to know what your credit report reflects that reality. Mistakes happen every day, and mistakes on your credit report can dramatically affect your life.

The good news is that it is easy for anyone to correct errors on their credit report and avoid the headaches that these errors can cause.

It is a fact of life. Most adults in North America suffer from a blemish or two on their credit report. These few items could be all that prevents you from getting a better job, buying your dream home, or obtaining new credit when you need it the most.

According to an article in the Toronto Sun, business editor, Linda Leatherdale states that Canadian consumers owe an amazing $900 billion or 107% of their disposable income. U.S. consumers owe a staggering $8.4 trillion or 112% of their disposable income.

Bad credit is embarrassing, humiliating, and depressing because many people believe that a bad credit report is indicative of a person’s worth and value as a human being. But even if the problems being reported are true there are still some legitimate ways you can improve your credit report.

People with bad credit are not “deadbeats.” Everyone wants to be able to pay their bills. People typically maintain a good credit rating until some unforeseen circumstance like a layoff, medical problem, or divorce prevents them from making a few payments in a timely manner.

Everyone struggles long and hard to pay the bills on time, but sometimes the money coming in does not quite keep up with what needs to get paid. When you’re in this situation you have to carefully choose your priorities. If things get really bad, sadly enough, bankruptcy might become an attractive alternative.

If it comes down to a decision between putting food on the table and paying the credit card bill, the clear choice for most people is to look after their family first. You can bet that even those hard-nosed, self-righteous collection agents who call and hound you to pay their bill would do the same. All their talk about how they pay their bills and expect everyone else to do the same, is just a psychological ploy intended to intimidate you. The reality is that most people are only a few pay cheques away from financial catastrophe and these telephone collectors are no different from anyone else.

By knowing, and exercising your rights, you will be well on your way to rebuilding or maintaining your credit. You will have the confidence and ability to regain your financial strength and freedom. Rebuilding a good credit record requires honesty, integrity, persistence, and vigilance from this point forward. Don’t worry about the past. You cannot change it. Focus on changing your future. Improving and maintaining a good credit record will reward you and your family with a real sense of empowerment and financial freedom.

The Idiots Guide to Selecting a Credit Card Part

The Idiots Guide to Selecting a Credit Card Part II

There are literally hundreds – possibly thousands – of credit card offers available to consumers these days. And these days there are more things to compare than just interest rates and fees. Now, credit card holders can be rewarded for their using credit cards. Or, if youre a business owner, you might find extra features and perks with a business credit card. In this article well go over the basics of some of these above-and-beyond features of credit cards. Whenever youre thinking of applying for a credit card, its always best to compare all of their features so you get the best credit card that matches your financial lifestyle.

Rewards Programs

Probably one of the most attractive features of credit cards these days is the rewards programs that they sometimes offer. Credit card companies will often reward their cardholders for making purchases with the cards. Rewards can range from airline tickets to cash back to hotel discounts, depending on which credit card you apply for. The rewards are usually based on a point system with each dollar you spend using your credit card, you are rewarded a certain number of points that are collected in your account. When you have a certain number of points, you are able to redeem them for the reward that your credit card offers.

How can you use these types of cards to your best advantage? Think about what you do the most do you travel? Do you drive a lot and use a lot of gasoline? Do you shop at a particular store a lot? Consumers usually choose rewards credit cards that match their spending habits the best. If you travel a lot, it would be best to get a credit card that offers airline rewards. If youre on the road a lot, try finding an offer that gives you a discount on gasoline, or cash back for gasoline purchases. One thing to remember when selecting a rewards program make sure that once you choose it, it fits your needs exactly. For instance, if you fly frequently but usually fly on Midwest Express, make sure your credit card offers rewards for Midwest Express and not American Airlines. If youre a big driver, make sure youre getting rewarded for using the gasoline thats most available to you BP, Amoco, etc. There are some rewards cards that allow you a choice, but its always important to make sure youre going to get what you expect!

Business Features

If you are a business owner, using a business credit card can help you with things like payroll, managing expenses, and managing employee spending. Business credit cards now offer features like:

Detailed expense reporting allowing you to see very clearly where your hard earned business dollars are being spent.
Online account management allowing you to view and manage your credit accounts via the internet for added convenience
Customized cards and employee cards allowing you as the business owner to receive cards for your employees
Increased credit limits- allowing you to make the business purchases you need to keep your business running.
Rewards either travel, cash back, or other discounts, rewards allow you to enjoy a little bit of what youre spending

Make sure when youre applying for a business credit card that you compare these types of features and make sure your business card will meet the needs of you, your business, and your employees.

Online Access

Its not news anymore online access to bank accounts and credit accounts is just about standard these days. If youre a high powered geek, though, you might want to check out the interface and features of the online access that your credit card allows you. Online access offers you 24×7 access to your statements, transactions, customer support and billing making it much easier for you to monitor your credit expenses and pay your bills.

Security & Protection

Another feature of credit cards that is just about standard these days is the protection that credit card issuers offer you for things like identity theft and fraudulent use of your credit card. Unfortunately, there are still people out there who can acquire your credit card numbers usually by finding a receipt with your credit card number on it, getting the number through hacking online, etc.
Consumers should always keep credit card receipts in a safe place, shred them, or at the very least make sure that the credit card number and expiration date is not shown on the receipt before you throw it out. The good news is that if you notice a fraudulent charge on your credit card, its usually as easy as calling up your credit card company and reporting it. 9 times out of 10, its easy enough to prove that you didnt make the charge, and your credit card company will remove that charge from your account. With some of the higher end cards platinum cards, etc. the credit card companies actively monitor your account and will personally call you if they notice unusual activity on your credit card. In some cases, they do not authorize payments until they get approval from the card holder. These types of features add safety and security for consumers.

The Enticing Trap Of Credit Card Debt

It has never been easier for people to live well beyond their means than it is today. Credit is easy to obtain, and in a society obsessed with material gain, credit is sought and used on a basis that is so regular even financial watchdogs are beginning to sound warning bells. The average savings for the United States and Canada over the next few years are actually expected to go into the negative figures, as more people purchase what they cannot afford.

One of the main contributors to this phenomenon is the credit card. Credit cards are very easy to obtain, and most people get them thinking they will be handy in an emergency. This is the case, but what the credit card companies know is that it will not be long before you use that piece of plastic to make a purchase that is certainly not in an emergency situation.

One way that credit cards have succeeded in getting a flood of people to spend beyond their means is to make credit cards available everywhere. The rise of the Internet has fueled a massive increase in the use of credit cards, as it is often the sole means people have to make an online purchase. Anytime you make a credit card purchase, however, there is the chance that you will forget about it. Statements that come out once a month are a great way for credit card companies to make sure their customers rack up the bills to the point where they will not be able to pay them all off in one shot, and thus gain the hefty interest.

Credit card companies also use promotional gimmicks to entice customers to charge all of their purchases on their cards. Most credit card companies have teamed up with auto dealers or some other company in order to give customers points towards future purchases. Visa has the well-advertised Win What You Buy campaign. People can be so tempted by this that they place all their purchases in the Visa in the hopes of getting it all for free. The prize, however, is rarer than winning the lottery.

Staying out of credit card debt requires using that piece of plastic frugally. If you dont have the money in the bank to make the purchase, do not do so with your credit card – it will only cost you more money in the end. If you do encounter an emergency and have to make a payment on your card, pay it off as soon as possible. If you cant do this, look into getting a line of credit from the bank. This may seem like stealing from Peter to pay Paul, but banks often offer a lower interest rate than a credit card, and the advantage of a line of credit is that banks automatically deduct an amount every month out of your other accounts toward your debt. Credit card companies are just as happy to have that debt grow and grow.

The Credit Card Application: A First Step Toward Credit

On most days I love my work as a financial advisor to my wide variety of clients. I love helping people take a serious look at their financial situation and helping them make wise financial decisions. I get frustrated, however, when my clients “put the buggy before the horse” so to speak and start worrying about things like credit problems before they have even applied for credit. I have had countless conversations about the importance of filling out a credit card application as the first step toward building credit.

It is shocking how many people forget about the credit card application as a necessary means to the end of actually having a credit card and being able to build up their credit card situation. So quite frequently I have to sit down with a client and work through the process of filling out a credit card application before we can move any further in our discussion about the importance of building up good credit for the rest of their lives.

The process of applying for credit can be rather overwhelming if you have no idea what kind of credit to apply for or what kind of credit card deals to avoid. If you’re anything like the average citizen, you receive countless credit card applications in the mail each week. How can you determine what really is a good deal and what is beneficial for your future? I’d encourage everyone to take their pile of credit card applications and make a visit to a financial advisor as soon as possible. Allow a professional to assist you in the decision making process.

The next step is just to fill out the credit card applications that you have chosen to go with and see which ones you are approved for. You might have a little trouble getting approved for your first credit card, but you’ll never know unless you actually fill out the credit card application to be approved. This is one of the simpliest yet most overlooked steps in the process of becoming people for whom getting credit isn’t an issue. So start at the beginning and do what it takes to get good credit.

The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Credit Cards For Teens

Credit Cards for Teens; Should You Purchase One?

Millions of adults are plagued with credit card debt from which many never recover. Credit card debt is an increasing problem among worldwide, and one may question the wisdom of credit cards for teens. Are credit cards a good idea for teenagers? Like many of life’s risks, credit cards for teens have their advantages and disadvantages.

Credit cards for teens work in a different way that traditional adult credit cards. Teenage credit cards do not loan out credit. To use these cards, one actually needs to have money already in the account. A teenage credit card is often a convenient way for parents to give their children money without having to hand over cash or a check. Credit cards for teens make a great gift, because they can be reloaded or thrown away when the balance is at zero.

Many parents choose to give their teenager a credit card because it increases their sense of responsibility and because it helps to educate them about handling money. Issuing Credit cards for teens is a safe and convenient way for kids to learn about credit cards, budgeting, and general finances. Learning proper money management is a big advantage for a teenager and will be useful in the future.

Teenage credit cards are generally limited and monitored. Depending on the credit card company, parents and other adults who purchase the card can monitor the spending habits of the cardholder. This is convenient when trying to determine how a teenager is handling their money or what they are spending it on. Once the money is placed on a teenage credit card, the card acts and functions as if it were a traditional adult card. Online shopping has grown in popularity among individuals of all ages. A teenager could pay for an adult or unapproved item without their parents even knowing about it; therefore, a credit history report is important and often requested.

Although credit cards for teens are convenient for both parents and children, many teenagers may become dependent on the convenience. Carrying around a credit card instead of cash or a checkbook is easier, however, it comes with price. Although many banks charge a fee for credit or debit cards, the fee is generally drastically lower than the ones attached with a credit card. Teenagers or young adults who become accustomed to paying with plastic often put themselves at risk of serious credit problems when they obtain a traditional credit card. Because they are used to just whipping out the plastic charge card, they may be more likely to do so in college or later on in life.

Credit cards for teens can be an asset or a liablity. They may teach kids the importance of tracking money and not spending beyond their means. However, there are other teenagers who may handle the situation differently. The decision to offer your child a credit card is one that the whole family should decide carefully. Giving credit cards for teens to a try for a while just might work out in your benefit. If it doesn’t work out, just throw away the card when the balance has been depleted and revert back to traditional cash. There are numerous ways to educate your child about money, including giving your child a teenage credit card.

Super Balance Transfer Credit Cards

Credit cards are a great way to spend money that you do not have and we all know that so it is nothing new to us. A credit card is a spending tool that many of us would feel as if we had had a limb cut off if we could no longer have one, would also ring true to a lot of people.

Start Making Money

There are ways to make money from credit cards, rather than them being a drain on your finances. One such way that many may do not know about is the 0% Super Balance Transfer, another step up from the 0% Balance Transfer, which lets you move your debt around to save you from paying interest charges. The 0% Super Balance Transfer allows you to pay other debts.

This is how it works, a 0% Super Balance Transfer can be used to pay off any debts that you have that are not credit card related. This is done by paying the money that you will get from the new credit card straight into your bank account, leaving you free to pay off any manner of debt that you have, this is where it differs from the normal 0% Balance Transfer facility.

You can pay off any debt that suits

This cash can also be transferred into your account even if you are free from any debt, which means that you can place your credit limit into a high savings account, then once the 0% interest period is almost over, you take the cash that the credit card company lent you and pay it back into and thus clearing the credit card debt. Always remember though that while this cash is lying in your savings account gathering interest you will still have to meet the minimum payment set by the credit card issuer, which is normally 2% of the balance or a minimum of 5.00.

The golden rule! Do not use this card to make purchases!

Once you have paid off the credit card you will be left with a profit for borrowing someone elses cash, but what you have to remember is that you dont spend on the credit card, this will only eat into the profits that are there to be made and could defeat the whole purpose of why you were doing it in the first place.

Finding the credit card companies who offer this service wont be too difficult, but most will require a fee to transfer your credit limit into your account, this will normally be a 2% charge to a maximum of 50, though you may find that a few credit card companies will not be charging as much as this.

Student Credit Cards – An Introduction

Just as the term itself suggests, student credit cards are credit cards meant exclusively for students, many of whom are yet to earn a documented income with employment. Credit card issuers are mindful of students and their credit challenges so they make accommodations for students when building student credit card offers specifically. Typically, the only constraint when applying for a student credit card is the age of the student, and as mandated by the law of the country, which is typically 18 years old and above at the time of application. In many ways, a student credit card is very similar to traditional, run-of-the-mill credit cards. But the major difference, is the standard APR, or interest rate, levied for card purchases, which is relatively higher than a traditional credit card APR.

Credit Card Use & Credit Score

Student credit cards provide more financial flexibility for young students. But, while it may come in handy when paying the rent, paying tuition, purchasing books, and other necessary items like food and clothing, unbridled card swiping can sometimes lead to financial trouble, especially in the form of poor credit scores and damaged credit histories. To a certain extent, this can be blamed on a lack of education or awareness as young people, often times, will not think too much about the concept of credit scoring or the idea of building a good credit history. As a result of this lack of awareness, they will typically not restrain themselves from using the credit card freely either.

The danger of poor credit scores will not become readily apparent, but will certainly become apparent when the student approaches a bank for credit at a later point in time. Credit profiling or credit scores, as determined by any of the three credit bureaus, represent an individual’s credit life history, and black marks on credit histories, however they are acquired, will make it difficult, at worst, and more expensive, at best, to secure the lowest possible interest rate on the loan or financing. So, consequently, even if one manages to get the home loan or car loan, for instance, the interest rate, in order to accommodate the increased credit risk perceived by the bank, will be higher than normal, and in turn, much more expensive for the borrower. The bottom line is that student credit cards represent a potential risk to future economic standing if the cards are not used judiciously.

Using Student Credit Cards

As previously mentioned, it is clear that uncontrolled use of a student credit card can easily damage an individuals budding credit scoring and credit history profile. But on the flip side, intelligent spending and timely payback can go a long way toward building a solid credit history and credit score. Using the card for necessary purchases that are well within his/her payback capabilities and making the payments well within the due date can improve ones credit rating tremendously.

Credit Bureau Reporting

The rules of credit bureaus are pretty straightforward. The amount of money that an individual borrows will be reflected in his or her credit report and the credit limits that each person can retain will be reflected in the amount of credit that the individual has previously “borrowed” and has paid back on time. Simple, right?

One additional point of interest … the credit card company is supposed to report each transaction that is been done on a particular credit card account to the three major credit bureaus promptly. But this does not happen in every case. More specifically, secure student credit cards or prepaid cards, often times will not report transactions to the major credit bureaus. Therefore, it is the users responsibility to make sure that the credit card transaction history is indeed being reported to the credit bureaus and is being done done in a timely manner. Remember, an unnoticed credit transaction does not do any good to improve your credit history.
